Representatives of Access/PalmSource, Trolltech, and the OSDL will speak on the “State of Linux on Mobile Devices,” in Palo Alto, Calif. at 6:30 P.M. tonight. The meeting will feature presentations by Bill Weinberg, head of OSDL's Mobile Linux Initiative, Trolltech CTO Benoit Schillings, and Access/PalmSource product strategy director John Cook.

The meeting, sponsored by the SDForum, will open with a presentation by Weinberg, who will identify key players and outline their motivations and challenges, both technical and non-technical.

Next, Schillings and Cook will each separately discuss “how they are advancing and distributing Linux on mobile phones, domestically and internationally.”

According to the meeting's profile, Linux shipped on 10-15 million phones in Asia in 2005, including about two dozen models from top brands such as Motorola, as well as “mid-tier OEMs.” Linux currently has about a quarter of the smart phone segment, but less than five percent of the total phone market. “In this meeting, we'll have an opportunity to explore the early success of Linux on mobile phone, and the possible barriers to wider adoption,” SDForum says.

The meeting will take place at Accenture Technology Labs, 1661 Page Mill Road, in Palo Alto, Calif. It starts at 6:30 P.M., with speakers scheduled through 8:40. Further details on the meeting, including speaker bios and a complete agenda, are here.
