Linux prominent at ESC Boston

(VDC) has published its annual re-cap of the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC), held in Boston the week of Sept. 18. VDC's report highlights several announcements of potential interest to developers and companies in the embedded Linux market.
VDC's “best of show” award went to Telelogic/I-Logix, for the 7.0 release of Rhapsody, a model-driven development tool. Rhapsody has long supported Linux, and has been integrated with tools from commercial Linux providers.
VDC's “key announcement” pick went to Mentor Graphics, for reducing the cost of its “EDGE” EDA (electronic data automation) tools. VDC also praised Mentor for pursuing the mobile phone applications processor segment with an improved version of Nucleus, and a “key partnership” with STMicro involving Nomadik applications processors.
Linux-related ESC news noted by VDC included:
- Enea's release of Element 2.0
- Test tools announcements from Coverity and others
- ThreadX RTOS vendor Express Logic led a “no BS” panel discussion on the supposed waning of interest in Linux for real-time and embedded applications
- LynuxWorks's round of top-level executive promotions
- Hitachi's launch of Entier, a lightweight RDBMS for mobile devices based on Linux and other OSes
- McObject's port of its eXtremeDB in-memory database to eCos
- Macraigor's usb2sprite debugger for Freescale Coldfire and DSP 56300 processors
- Microcross's deal with Trolltech to integrate and resell Qtopia with its GNU X-Tools
