Metrowerks has pledged to offer a comprehensive array of embedded Linux development tools for a new system-on-chip (SoC) communications processor family expected in Q4 2004 from Motorola spinoff Freescale Semiconductor. The tools will support board bring-up, driver development, application creation, code analysis, and Linux kernel-level debugging.

The forthcoming MPC8349E processors are the first PowerQUICC II chips built with a system-on-chip (SoC) architecture. According to Metrowerks, the SoC architecture will enable rapid configuration of functional blocks that address customer and market needs. The chips target networking devices with custom hardware logic needs, including Ethernet routers and switches, wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment and embedded security devices.

Metrowerks tools for the PowerQUICC II SoCs will be available concurrent with the chip family's launch, it says, and will include:

• PowerTAP Pro
• CodeWarrior Development Studio, PowerPC ISA Edition
• A Linux board support package
• CodeWarrior Development Studio, Embedded Linux Edition for PowerPC Architectures
• Platform Creation Suite
• CodeTest Software Analysis Tools
