Linux unavailable to programmers on new Motorola phones?
Mar 21, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsIDG News Service reports that Motorola does not plan to initially allow programmers to develop Linux-based applications to run on its recently announced A760 combination handset/PDA, due to concerns that “Linux is not secure enough.” Instead, developers will… have to code their apps in Java, which is supported on the device as an application and middleware environment.
The IDG story suggests that Motorola either has had second thoughts about making the embedded Linux OS layer accessable to application developers, or that they never really intended to have developers write apps to run directly on Linux but were simply using the Linux connection to add buzz to the public announcement of their new Linux-powered device.
