The Eclipse Foundation awarded its EclipseCon 2008 Technology Awards yesterday, and named Wind River Workbench (pictured at left) as the “Best Commercial Eclipse-Based Developer Tool.” Other award winners included EclEmma, Cyrano, Xmind 2008, and MyTourbook.

The Eclipse IDE (integrated development environment) has been widely adopted by embedded tools vendors, in part because it runs on Linux, Windows, Solaris, and Macintosh development hosts, saving vendors the hassle of maintaining their tools on multiple platforms. Thus, it's no surprise that in the tools division, more than 55 IDEs were nominated.

Among commercial tools products, Wind River Workbench 3.0 took home the prize. The product includes simulator targets for Wind River's Linux and VxWorks environments, and also comes with target management tools, multicontext and multiprocessor debugging, and real-time analysis tools, Wind River said.

Many key Workbench features were developed under or contributed to the Eclipse Foundation's Device Software Development Platform (DSDP), one of only five top-level Eclipse projects, and one that Wind River proposed and has led. Some DSDP code made it into last year's Europa project release.

The Eclipse Foundation's Technology Awards were given in several categories, including both open source projects and commercial products, and not only tools but also “Rich Client Platform” (RCP) applications (which use Eclipse as a framework for enterprise client-server applications), and Equinox (now Eclipse Runtime) applications based on the open source Equinox implementation of OSGi standards. Other category winners included:

• Best Commercial Eclipse-Based Developer Tool — Wind River Workbench. Finalists: Nexaweb Studio X and Polarion ALM Team for Subversion.
• Best Open Source Eclipse-Based Developer Tool — EclEmma. Finalist: Spring IDE.
• Best Commercial Equinox Application — Cyrano. Finalist BusinessReport Studio.
• Best Commercial RCP Application — Xmind 2008. Finalist openVXML.
• Best Open Source RCP Application — MyTourbook. Finalist: Apache Directory Studio.

Winners were said to be selected by a panel of judges from the Eclipse community, with nominees evaluated on user interfaces, innovation, and comprehensiveness. The Eclipse Foundation also handed out Individual Awards to honor “those who have given time and resources to make Eclipse a better community”:

• Top Ambassador — Ed Merks
• Top Committer — Chris Aniszczyk
• Top Contributor — Remy Chi Jian Suen
• Top Newcomer Evangelist — Eric Rizzo

Mike Milinkovich, executive director of Eclipse.org, stated, “Wind River's support of Eclipse speaks volumes about the importance and significance of Eclipse in the embedded industry.”
