Linux video player gains playback capabilities
May 11, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOn2 has announced that MPlayer, the reference video and multimedia player for Linux, now supports two older On2 CODECs. On2 sells high-end CODECs used in set-top boxes, consumer electronics devices, and wireless applications.
MPlayer 1.0pre4, codenamed “YAML Counter” and released on April 28, 2004, includes support for On2's “TrueMotion” VP5 and VP6 CODECs, which On2 claims can provide VHS quality over 100Kbit/sec or DVD quality over 1MB/sec connections.
On2 claims the current version of its CODEC — VP6.2 — has better video quality than Windows Media 9, Real 9, or H.264.
“The marketplace cannot underestimate the importance of Linux as an operating system on desktop and laptop computers,” noted On2 CEO Douglas A. McIntyre.
In addition to commercial CODECs, On2 provides video encoding, customized technical support, and consulting/integration services.
