Framingham, MA — (press release excerpt) — IDG World Expo today announced the keynote line-up and feature presentations for this summer's LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, to be held at The Moscone Center in San Francisco August 26 – 30, 2001. The show, which is the premiere event focusing exclusively on Linux and Open Source solutions, is expected to be the largest ever.

“The schedule for this summer's LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is already jam-packed with the latest trends and initiatives in the Linux market,” said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo. “We've filled the show with some of the most influential leaders in the industry. Every one of these keynotes and feature presentations is a must-attend event for anyone who wants to be on the leading edge of this technology.”

The keynote line-up includes:

• Shane Robison, chief technology officer and senior vice president of Compaq Computer Corporation. Robison will discuss Linux in the enterprise in the opening keynote, to be held Tuesday, August 28 at 9:00 a.m.

• Larry Lessig, Professor of Law at Stanford University and author of Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace. Lessig will address the Linux community Wednesday, August 29 at 9:00 a.m.

• Matthew Szulik, president and CEO of Red Hat, Inc. Szulik will discuss the next wave for open source and its effects on the technology industry on August 30 at 9:00 a.m.

The $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award will be presented by Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, and Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo, immediately following the Wednesday morning keynote.

Also back by popular demand is the Golden Penguin Bowl, a quiz show that tests the wits of some of the most notable open source personalities. The Golden Penguin Bowl is scheduled to take place Tuesday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. and will be hosted by Nicholas Petreley, contributing editor for LinuxWorld and InfoWorld magazines. Contestants confirmed to date include Daniel Frye of IBM, Jon “Maddog” Hall of Linux International and Dan Quinlan of Linux Standard Base.

LinuxWorld Conference & Expo will also feature a panel discussion on The State of Open Source, to be held on Wednesday, August 29 at 2:30 p.m. and hosted by Larry Augustin, CEO of VA Linux Systems. The panel will discuss the software development methodologies used by successful Open Source software projects, with each member of the panel representing a different methodology. The panel will include Linus Torvalds (Linux), Jeremy Allison (Samba), Brian Behlendorf (Apache), Chip Salzenberg (Perl), and Dirk Hohndel (XFree86).

A second panel discussion, Best Practices with Linux for an e-Business Infrastructure, will be held Wednesday, August 29 at 4 p.m. This panel will discuss the current state of enterprise applications running on Linux. The panel will be moderated by Ross Mauri, president of the Open Source Development Lab and vice president of eServer Development at IBM.
