MontaVista and RTI have made good on their commitment to ship three of RTI's real-time performance analysis and debugging tools as plugins for MontaVista's Eclipse-based embedded Linux tools framework. StethoScope, ProfileScope, and MemScope are now available as DevRocket plugins, on the x86 and PowerPC architectures.

The arrival of ScopeTools — arguably the embedded industry's most mature and popular RTOS debugging tools — could be timely given MontaVista's launch last month of an open source real-time Linux project. The companies first announced plans to integrate RTI's real-time tools with MontaVista's tools framework in March, though at that time they projected a Q2 2004 delivery.

RTI has partnered with MontaVista competitor Wind River on real-time tools for VxWorks, Wind River's proprietary RTOS, for more than 12 years. Wind River also promised in March to port ScopeTools to its Eclipse-based WorkBench toolsuite, which supports both Linux and VxWorks, and it delivered on that promise with the June launch of WorkBench 2.0.

The original ScopeTool — StethoScope — lets developers watch variables and memory locations in real time as a system runs. RTI first shipped StethoScope for Linux in January of 2001. It joined the Eclipse Foundation in May of this year.

Availability

The ScopeTools are available now through MontaVista, for x86 and PPC, with support for other architectures to be announced in the near future, according to MontaVista.
