SUNNYVALE, Calif.–MontaVista Software Inc., maker of the Hard Hat Linux operating system (OS) for embedded computers, has named Kevin Morgan as vice president of engineering and Brian Grega as vice president of sales and marketing. Morgan and Grega together bring 35 years of experience in embedded computing, real-time computing and the Unix operating system environment to Sunnyvale, Calif.-based… MontaVista Software.

MontaVista is one of a handful but growing number of software companies making the popular open-source Linux OS available to developers of embedded computer systems.

“The additions of Kevin and Brian to our management team take MontaVista from start-up mode to the next level in service for embedded systems developers interested in using the Linux OS,” says MontaVista Software President and CEO Jim Ready, an acclaimed pioneer of real-time operating systems. “From servers to the desktop and now embedded systems, Linux can unify the fragmented OS market. We believe embedded developers can be part of that mainstream of OS technology, and MontaVista is making it happen.”

Morgan has 20 years of experience developing embedded and real-time computer systems for Hewlett-Packard Co. A computer industry driver since 1980, Morgan was a member of the HP1000 computer software design team. Morgan's expertise is operating systems research and development. While at Hewlett-Packard he worked as engineer, project manager and section manager across five operating systems. Most recently serving as HP-UX Operating System Laboratory Manager, Morgan was responsible for overall HP-UX release planning, execution and delivery for Hewlett-Packard server computers.

“Linux is a tidal wave moving through the computing industry,” says Morgan. “MontaVista is well-positioned to be the leader in embedded Linux products and support, and is an excellent match for my background and skills. I look forward to providing leadership in embedded Linux technology and products from MontaVista.”

Grega has more than 15 years of embedded systems experience. Grega spent seven years as vice president of strategic partnerships and director of North American sales at Microtec Research Inc. (now Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division) before moving on to Lynx Real-Time Systems Inc. as vice president of North American sales. He also spent seven years at Applied Microsystems where his duties included both product marketing and sales management. Grega most recently
served as vice president of sales for GLOBEtrotter Software Inc., a San Jose-based maker of electronic commerce products and services. While there he led GLOBEtrotter's sales team to triple its sales growth rate in just 14 months.

“The Linux market is growing at a rate of two to five times faster than that of any other operating system available and in use today,” says Grega. “We'll leverage our combined experience in the embedded computing market with Hard Hat Linux – a low-cost, scalable, feature-rich operating system — and help MontaVista become a dominant supplier to embedded applications.”

MontaVista, which debuted its Hard Hat Linux distribution earlier this year, is already off to a running start with partners Force Computers Inc., Motorola Computer Group, Ziatech Corp. and WinSystems Inc. Hard Hat Linux is running on these companies' CompactPCI and PC/104 based single-board computer (SBC) platforms, popular choices for use in telecommunications and Internet appliance applications.
