MontaVista pledges consumer electronics Linux support for “Bulverde”
Nov 4, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsMontaVista Software says it will support Intel's next-generation XScale processor, codenamed “Bulverde,” with the consumer electronics version of its embedded Linux OS. Bulverde is part of Intel's “Personal Internet Client Architecture” (Intel PCA), the company's development blueprint for designing wireless devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities. MontaVista claims its Linux Consumer Electronics Edition (CEE) will effectively exploit Bulverde's highly integrated architecture.
Bulverde is a highly integrated processor with full Intel buzzword-compliance: it is based on XScale technology and will use Quick Capture Technology to enable wireless devices to capture high quality still and video pictures. Wireless Intel SpeedStep Technology will extend battery life, while Wireless MMX technology will “deliver fast multimedia performance.” More details about Bulverde are available at DeviceForge.
MontaVista claims CEE 3.0 is designed for reduced boot and shutdown times, improved real-time response, reduced ROM/RAM size utilization, and efficient dynamic power management.
