Too little significance was accorded MontaVista's real-time announcements last month, according to VDC's Embedded Systems Bulletin for August. Additionally, the analyst firm says investor reaction to Wind River's Q2 results was overly negative.

During the first few days of August, MontaVista announced interrupt response times for Linux approaching those of traditional RTOSes (real-time operating systems). Such capabilities, if successfully productized and widely adopted, could result in much wider penetration for Linux in the embedded market, VDC says, given that a lack of real-time capabilities has historically been Linux's biggest limiting factor (see VDC chart) in embedded.

Additionally, VDC analyst Chris Lanfear, author of the Bulletin, says he thinks investors reacted unfairly to Wind River's excellent Q2 earnings report, which also included lower advice for Q3 than previously forecast. Lanfear says he expects Wind River to meet predictions for the year, given its record of strong Q4 results and the current management team's outstanding record of meeting forecasts.
