Motorola adds Carrier Grade Linux partner

Aug 9, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Embedded Linux provider Wind River has forged a joint development, marketing, and support agreement with Motorola's network equipment division, it says. The “strategic alliance” aims to bring Wind River's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) and VxWorks OSes to Motorola's AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA (pictured at left) products.

Motorola's standards-based network equipment products target telecom, military and aerospace, medical, and industrial automation. The company has long enjoyed an OEM relationship with Wind River competitor MontaVista, allowing it to deliver network equipment pre-installed with MontaVista Linux, Carrier Grade Edition.

Motorola's new relationship with Wind River, meanwhile, involves “bundled hardware and software solutions,” suggesting that Wind River's CGL-compliant Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition distribution will be available as an option.

CMO John Bruggeman said that despite Wind River's relatively late entry into the market for CGL OSes, compared to MontaVista, it already partners with all eight of the top NEPs (network equipment providers). Bruggeman also claimed that Wind River's support engineering staff of 300 outnumbers MontaVista's total employee count.

Wind River and Motorola will also work together to integrate, market, and support VxWorks, the companies said.
