Motorola to demo Linux at telecom industry show

May 9, 2006 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Motorola will demonstrate communications servers based on Linux and other open standards at the GlobalComm trade show, June 4-8 in Chicago. Faster ATCA switch fabrics and MicroTCA products will help drive adoption of modular, COTS (commercial off-the-shelf), open-standards based systems into data… plane and edge applications, Motorola says.

Motorola's GlobalComm demonstrations will include current AdvancedTCA products being used in IMS (integrated multimedia subsystems) applications, along with previews of forthcoming MicroTCA and 10Gbps switch-fabric ATCA platform products being used in VoIP, IPTV, and WiMAX applications, it says. Specific demonstrations include:

  • High availability failover of multiple high-definition video-on-demand streams and thousands of SIP-based VoIP calls on a Motorola Avantellis 3000 series ATCA communications server running MontaVista Linux, along with Motorola's NetPlane Software and Service Availability Forum specification implementations
  • Motorola's Centellis 3000 series ATCA communications server, developed in collaboration with Intel, running software from several ISVs (independent software vendors), and serving as a “single platform for multiple IMS network elements,” Motorola says
  • MicroTCA proof-of-concept demonstrating access and host applications, including:
    • A video conference system
    • A wireless base transceiver station for advanced wireless broadband access applications, such as WiMAX

  • 10Gbps switching in a Motorola Centellis 3000 series ATCA communications server, developed in collaboration with Interphase, Surf, and Artesyn Technologies, and shipping now to early access customers

In addition to modular, standards-based COTS systems, Motorola will demonstrate a custom telecom rack and ATCA frame-level integration developed by its professional services division, it says. And, Intel, Interphase, MontaVista, and Wind River are also expected to demonstrate Motorola hardware at their GlobalComm booths, Motorola says.

Wendy Vittori, GM of embedded communications computing at Motorola, stated, “Motorola has been selected for the majority of known outsourced ATCA based communications server projects, most of which are control plane applications. We believe this indicates that ATCA communications servers are the emerging trend for this class of network functionality.”

Vittori added, “Our 10Gbps Ethernet switching proof-of-concept will show how open, standards-based communications servers will extend into data plane applications such as the emerging high-definition IPTV. And with the recent announcement that we will be including MicroTCA platforms in our portfolio, the benefits of communications servers extend from the core to the edge of the network.”
