‘NAS-in-a-Flash’ simplifies building a Linux-based NAS
Aug 12, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsAtlanta, GA and Cork, Ireland — (press release excerpt) — Raidtec Corp. announced the launch of NAS-in-a-Flash, an implementation of its NAS Operating System, FlashLinux. NAS-in-a-Flash is the entire FlashLinux combination of NAS OS and storage applications suite embedded in a Flash plug-in module for Intel CPU based motherboards.
It is estimated by IT analysts that in excess of one third of general purpose servers are deployed as network file servers. This represents a very large opportunity for manufacturers of Intel CPU based motherboards and system builders to add value to their offerings by providing a turnkey embedded NAS filer option, rather than a general purpose server operating system such as W2K. The cost of W2K server OS in addition to the required Client Access Licenses (CALs) often results in a solution cost to the end user that is more than the Server cost. In these days of tight budgets less costly alternatives must be considered. FlashLinux NAS-in-a-Flash is the answer. NAS-in-a-Flash comes with a server license with unlimited client access and costs a fraction of the cost of W2K with the required CALs. Additionally, it provides a more powerful and full-featured heterogeneous NAS environment 'in-a-Flash'!
NAS-in-a-Flash offers a full featured, well-proven and incredibly reliable NAS OS embedded in a Flash Memory module, which is plugged into an IDE header on supported motherboards. The NAS Filer is then ready to go. Simply plug it into the Ethernet LAN and switch it on. Configuration is through a Web browser from any client computer on the LAN.
Product Features:
- NAS OS totally bootable and operational from Flash memory module

NAS-in-a-Flash provides a turnkey NAS OS solution that turns Intel CPU based server class motherboards into highly scalable heterogeneous NAS Filers. Linux and Unix are field proven to be among the best performing and most stable network file server platforms with highest reliability. NAS-in-a-Flash combines these robust network file sharing and file system technologies in a highly optimised, fully integrated, pre-configured plug in, ready to install package.
NAS-in-a-Flash is now shipping. Additional optional features such as snapshot, clustering and remote copy will be available to purchase and download over the web. Significant OEM and System Builder discounts are available.
