NetCentrex Picks Motorola Linux Platforms for Voice Over IP

TEMPE, AZ — Motorola Computer Group, the leading provider of embedded computing platforms for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), today announced that its CompactPCI-based telecommunications platforms have been selected as the foundation for an IP gatekeeper solution from French IP telephony company NetCentrex. Announced at NetWorld+Interop Paris '99, the CCS-XL Call Control Server¾a next-generation switch aimed at the creation of IP network services¾will use Motorola's CPX2208T CompactPCI platform with the Linux operating system, as well as a high-performance computing engine built from a combination of MCP750 system-slot and MCPN750 non-system slot CompactPCI processor boards. Utilizing off-the-shelf technologies such as CompactPCI and Linux( enables OEMs in this rapidly moving IP telephony market to bring their products to market faster by allowing them to focus on their core competency¾software.

“The CompactPCI components from Motorola provide us with an excellent platform for our architecture,” said Olivier Hersent, founder and CEO of NetCentrex. “Running the CCS-XL gatekeeper over multiple CPUs with hot-swap capabilities is key to our ability to provide truly carrier-grade solutions. Using standard open hardware and software such as CompactPCI and Linux shortens our development times dramatically, enabling us to bring our products to market release much more quickly.”

The CCS-XL implements gatekeeper functions using the H.323 architecture to create a highly scalable solution. This distributed architecture implementation gives the gatekeeper independent access to all call signaling, allowing it to manipulate calls without having to access the media flow directly.

Motorola's CPX2000 range provides powerful, economical and flexible platforms for OEMs and system integrators across a range of telephony and telecom applications. The variants that incorporate an H.110 Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) telephony bus are particularly well suited to customer premise equipment (CPE) and enterprise applications such as voice over IP gateways, PBX and interactive voice response (IVR). The CPX2208 platform, with integrated H.110 telephony backplane, uses an eight-slot chassis that features front and rear I/O connectivity, PICMG(r) 2.1 compliant hot swapping of I/O, a hot swap cooling system, AC or DC power supplies, and regular PICMG 2.0 rev 2.1 or PICMG 2.5 H.110 Telephony Bus CompactPCI backplanes.

The MCP750 system slot processor board provides overall control of a CompactPCI system. Operating in non-system slots, the MCPN750 boards allow the configuration of loosely coupled multiprocessor systems. Both processor boards are based on Motorola's innovative PowerPlus architecture, which is designed to maximize both PowerPC 750 processing performance and data throughput, providing an optimum fit for demanding telecommunications applications such as an IP gatekeeper. The MCPN750 is designed with hot-swap capability, allowing it to be exchanged for repair or upgrade while the system is in operation.

The CCS-XL Call Control Server is available from NetCentrex. The CPX2000, MCP750 and MCPN750 are included in the extensive range of CompactPCI embedded computing platforms from Motorola Computer Group and its distributors.
