ACCESS released a new version of its NetFront embedded web-browser for embedded systems and devices, today. According to ACCESS, NetFront v3.1 NetFront conforms to the latest W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards including CSS (cascading style sheets), DHTML (dynamic HTML) and also to the WAP 2.0 specification, which enables… resource constrained, non-PC hardware to browse the Internet.

Enhancements in version v3.1 are said to include . . .

• Smart-Fit rendering, a patent-pending technology that intelligently adjusts and renders web pages to small display screens, making horizontal scrolling unnecessary.
• Strengthened security functions such as client signature authorization provides end-users with the same level of security as desktop browsers.
• Direct-Connect which enables direct hardware viewing and manipulation of peripheral devices
• OMA DRM compatibility, enabling download-type online distribution services for content with strict copyright control.

A new software development kit (SDK) allowing developers to customize the NetFront web browser to meet special requirements will be released later this year, the company said. The SDK will be offered in several versions, including ones for Linux/GTK+ and Linux/QtEmbedded/Qtopia.

According to ACCESS, NetFront browsers are currently embedded in over 86 million devices spanning 230 different products including PDAs, game consoles, digital cameras, digital televisions, and mobile phones.
