OnCore Systems has unveiled real-time Linux support for the IBM PowerPC 405 series of system-on-chip microprocessors. The support derives from OnCore's Microkernel Foundation real-time kernel, which can host a standard version of Linux and normal Linux application programs or processes, along with real-time processes.

The real-time Linux architecture consists of a dual-OS model, whereby an external real-world event triggers the OnCore microkernel to perform a fast context switch from any number of Linux applications to a designated real-time process. The approach allows embedded designers to develop systems that provide predictable real-time event responses, yet take advantage of the resources and standardization of an enterprise-class operating system like Linux.

Each IBM PowerPC 405 system-on-chip processor is equipped with an integrated Memory Management Unit (MMU) and provides a selection of embedded peripherals, including on-chip Ethernet, a code decompression engine, a PCI bus interface, on-chip SRAM, and intelligent multi-function I/O interfaces.
