The Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) announced that it is integrating the Real-Time Linux Foundation (RTLF) within its organization. The OSADL also announced a call for papers for the RTLF's 11th-annual Real Time Linux Workshop, to be held on September 28-30, in Dresden,… Germany.

As of Jan. 1, RTLF activities are being represented under OSADL's newly established Real Time Linux Foundation Working Group, says the group. All RTLF publications and content will be made available on the OSADL site, and the OSADL will continue to promote the group's annual workshops.

The OSADL, which has recently grown to 26 members, was modeled after the OSDL (Open Source Development Labs), which merged with the Free Standards Group (FSG), to form the Linux Foundation. What the OSDL/LF accomplished for Linux in general, the OSADL aims to do for Linux in automation. In the Fall of 2007, OSADL members joined together to celebrate their first anniversary (event pictured above).

The RTLF has a lengthier history, helping to advance the real-time aspects of Linux over the last decade. The group is known primarily for its annual workshops.

The new Real Time Linux Foundation Working Group comprises the RTLF's directors, plus Arthur Siro, who will act as the workshop coordinator. The members include:

Workshop Call for Papers

The OSADL's Real Time Linux Foundation Working Group has issued a call for papers for the Real Time Linux Workshop 2009, to be held in September in Dresden. Presentation topics should address real-time Linux research, experiments, and case studies, as well as the issue of integrating real-time and embedded Linux, says the OSADL. This year, there will be a special focus on industrial applications and safety related systems.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

• Real-time programming models and methods in mainstream Linux
• Modifications and variants of the GNU/Linux operating system extending its real-time capabilities
• Contributions to real-time Linux variants, drivers, and extensions
• User-mode real-time concepts, implementation, and experiences
• Real-time Linux applications, in academia, research, and industry
• Real-time Linux in measurement and data acquisition systems
• Linux/real-time Linux in safety related systems
• Signal processing with Linux/real-time Linux
• Work in progress reports, covering recent developments
• Educational material on real-time Linux
• Tools for embedding Linux or real-time Linux and embedded real-time Linux applications
• RTOS core concepts, RT-safe synchronization mechanisms
• Analysis and benchmarking methods and results of real-time GNU/Linux variants
• Debugging techniques and tools, both for code and temporal debugging of core RTOS components, drivers, and real-time applications
• Real-time related extensions to development environments
