Palm today announced that when it ships later “this summer,” the Foleo mobile companion will come equipped with remote PC access software from LogMeIn. The software will enable users to quickly and securely access files and network resources on their home or work computers, Palm said.

According to Palm, LogMeIn provides “easy desktop remote control, data backup, and file sharing,” giving Foleo users “the ability to quickly and securely access files and network resources on their home or work computers when away.”

LogMeIn offers both free and paid versions of its eponymous LogMeIn software and associated Web service. “LogMeIn Free” is said to give users access to their remote computers from virtually any web-enabled device, including viewing desktops, files, and network resources. “LogMeIn Pro,” available for around $70 per year for a single PC, adds features such as file transfer, remote printing, large-file sharing, and guest-invites. Both versions incorporate 128-to 256-bit SSL encryption to prevent unauthorized access, according to LogMeIn.

Joseph Eckert, LogMeIn's VP of corporate communications, confirmed that the version bundled with the Foleo will be LogMeIn Free.

Users will need to download and install the LogMeIn PC client on the PC they wish to access from their Foleo. The “target PC” (the PC to be accessed remotely) must be be running Windows 98, 2000, XP, or Server 2003, according to LogMeIn.

Other LogMeIn remote access products include Ignition, Scout, Reach, Backup, and Rescue, which was recently ported to Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS for handsets.

Palm will demonstrate the LogMeIn application running on the Foleo at the LinuxWorld Expo today in San Francisco.
