OpenMoko founder Sean Moss-Pultz moderates a panel discussion about the future of the mobile phone, in this hour-long podcast. Originally held on Valentine's day, and entitled “Mobile Linux Grows Up,” the discussion revolves around how and why Linux-based mobile phones might evolve to support user-installable… applications.

As background, Moss-Pultz founded the OpenMoko Project, aimed at building one of the first Linux-based mobile phone OSes to allow users to install applications, much as ringtones are installed today. In kicking off the discussion, Moss-Pultz asserts that without such applications, a Linux-based phone is a “smart open source brick.”

In addition to Moss-Pultz, panel participants include:

• Evan Bauer, of email and calendaring software vendor Scalix
• Jacob Lehrbaum, senior product line manager of Sun's mobile Java platform
• Darryl Champagne, a technology evangelist with push-email and synchronization specialist Funambol
