PPC VME SBC Runs Linux and Supports Harsh Environments

Jan 26, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

SAN DIEGO, CA — Synergy Microsystems announced today that its ruggedized VME PowerPC CPU board, the VGR5, has passed all shock and vibration tests required to qualify it for harsh environments. In one test, the VGR5 was subjected to random vibration in excess of 14 Gs while running programs under Linux. The board suffered no damage and continued to run application code flawlessly during and after the test.

The VGR5 conduction-cooled board provides dual on-board PowerPC processors, delivering unsurpassed performance in a single-slot solution. Processor options include one or two PowerPC G4s or 750s, at speeds from 300 MHz to 466 MHz. The board comes in a variety of ruggedization and temperature levels. Operating system support includes both Linux and VxWorks.

The VGR5 with G4 supports Synergy's available DSP math library. Synergy's Scientific Subroutine Library (SSSL) is optimized for performance with the G4's AltiVec vector processing unit. The hand-coded library supports single- and double-precision, as well as fixed- and floating-point operations. SSSL contains a wide variety of popular functions including vector and matrix support, image and signal processing, FFTs and scalar operations.

The VGR5 also offers 10/100Base-T Ethernet, serial, SCSI, a PMC site for additional I/O, and PØoPCI, a high-speed PCI secondary system bus through the PØ connector. PØoPCI allows multiple VGR5s to be connected by a 33 MHz, 64-bit PCI bus, in addition to the VME bus.

The VGR5 is the latest addition to Synergy's complete line of COTS single board computers. The line includes single, dual and quad processor boards available in a wide variety of temperature and ruggedization levels. All feature PowerPC processors.
