Esmertec says its pre-integrated mobile phone application suite was selected by a design firm in China for a Linux handset that will ship in Europe and China before year's end. Yuhua TelTech's Linux-based handset will use Esmertec's Jbed Java virtual machine (JVM) and “[email protected]” application suite.

Esmertec's “all-in-1” application stack for mobile phones includes its Jbed JVM, [email protected] MMS client, [email protected] WAP browser, and [email protected] DRM framework, delivered in a pre-integrated package. The company says the suite can save vendors the hassles of dealing with different software providers, as well as the technical challenges of software integration.

The Jbed JVM is available in builds that comply with both the standard Java CDC (connected device configuration), and the CLDC (connected limited device configuration) configuration for resource-constrained devices. Additionally, an “Advanced” build adds multitasking and MIDP (mobile information device profile) compliance.

Esmertec's [email protected] suite of native applications can be ported to various embedded environments, the company says. The suite includes an MMS (multimedia messaging service) client with a footprint of about 300KB, a (wireless application protocol) browser that weighs in at 560KB to 1.4MB, and a 50KB DRM framework that supporting ARM9 processors such as Freescale's i.MX21.

The [email protected] browser is said to comply with the Open Mobile Alliance's WAP 1.x and 2.0 specifications, and also supports HTML 4.01 and Javascript 1.5, GZIP deflating, and WCSS (wireless cascading style sheets). It targets feature phones, smart phones, and PDAs.

Availability

Esmertec's Jbed JVM and [email protected] applications are available now, separately or pre-integrated. They are being demonstrated at the ITU Telecom World tradeshow this week in Hong Kong, China.

Esmertec also markets a [email protected] POC (push-to-talk over cellular) application. that supports Linux.

Yahua TelTech has previously shipped the Linux-based Greenphone marketed by Trolltech.
