Programmable Logic Controllers gain embedded Linux

Toronto, ON. — Tabo Software Inc. has today introduced an embedded Linux based Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) module that is compatible with the low cost and highly popular DL305 Koyo/Ge Fanuc Series 1 PLC base.

Rob Peter, TABO chief technology officer, says the company chose to support the DL305 PLC base for reasons of familiarity and cost. As for using Linux, Peter says “it was my belief that a small group of Linux developers could synchronize development on one simple device to begin with, and make a successful go of it.”

The eL-PLC provides a complete plug-in system controller card that includes TCP/IP connectivity over 10BaseT Ethernet. The card contains a Motorola MC68EZ328 “DragonBall” CPU, 8 megabytes DRAM, 2 megabytes Flash ROM, real-time clock, an RS232C serial port, and a 10BaseT Ethernet interface. The device can control 184 points of I/O, and offers compatibility with modules designed to be plugged into the DL305 PLC base. The system's software is based on RT-control's uClinux embedded Linux and provides the features and flexibility typically required in automation and control applications.

System developer kits are immediately availible. The kits include the controller card, manuals, cables, demo code, drivers, and the uClinux kernel release in RPM format. Additionally, a version of SUSE Linux is also included in case the user is new to Linux.
