RNDIS function drivers support USB networking of Linux-based devices
Dec 13, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsVancouver, BC — (press release excerpt) — Belcarra Technologies today announced availability of Smart RNDIS function driver software on a variety of embedded Linux platforms. The Smart RNDIS function driver allows peripheral devices to interoperate with Microsoft Windows, Linux, and MAC OS/X hosts using either RNDIS or CDC compatible protocols where appropriate.
The Smart RNDIS function driver utilizes the GPL Linux USB Device Framework which was developed by Belcarra. Smart RNDIS implements both the Microsoft RNDIS and the USB Organization CDC networking protocols to support Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Macintosh users.
RNDIS and CDC are the industry standard methods of networking systems to USB devices, including cable routers, and PDA's. RNDIS is the “Remote” extension to Microsoft's NDIS (Network Device Interface Specification) supported directly in Windows ME and XP, and available as a free add-on for Windows 98 and Windows 2000. It allows implementation of a virtual Ethernet path between the USB host and USB function devices, achieving over ten times the speed of asynchronous serial connections.
The Belcarra solution consists of an installation kit for Windows end users and a Linux USB function module designed to fit into the Linux USB Device Framework. Currently supported platforms include the following: PXA-210, PXA-250, AMD/Alchemy AU1100, and the Hitachi SuperH 7727.
Belcarra Technologies specializes in embedded USB Device software.
