Sunnyvale, CA — (press release excerpt) — MontaVista announced today that STMicroelectronics has designated MontaVista as its first and preferred supplier of Linux for its ST40 system-on-chip (SOC) processors. MontaVista and STMicroelectronics will launch their alliance by collaborating on the development of Hard Hat Linux for ST40-based digital consumer platforms. The ST40 is a family of SOC products based on the SuperH, 32-bit SH-4 core.

The two companies are providing mutual early access to each other¹s internal development work. Moreover, MontaVista will offer Hard Hat Linux technical training and support to STMicroelectronics' customers. MontaVista will collaborate with STMicroelectronics to ensure that application stacks for Digital TV integrate seamlessly with current and future releases of Hard Hat Linux. MontaVista will also pursue joint sales and marketing activities with STMicroelectronics.

“ST sees an increasing demand for Linux for consumer applications, so we are delighted that MontaVista will be offering their embedded Linux products and services for our advanced consumer reference platforms”, said Jean-Yves Larignon, general manager of ST's Micro Core and Development Tools Division.
