Software guru releases open source “desktop (and palmtop) roadmap”
Nov 26, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsJim Gettys has released a roadmap for the open source desktop and palmtop. The roadmap is an attempt to create a “sketch of the names and relationships of these technologies and projects, and a glimpse into their status and development,” according to Gettys.
Gettys founded (with Bob Scheifler) the X windowing system and edited the final specification for HTML 1.1, but has worked more recently on the handhelds.org and Gnome projects. According to Gettys's homepage, he is currently working (for HP) on “making open source systems safe on handheld computers.”
Gettys's roadmap is a valuable glossary of computer terminology — a good place to find out what things like “Xinerama” and “Zeroconf” actually are. It also shows which technologies are emerging and which are being consigned to the “La Brea tar pits” of history, as Gettys puts it.
