Software module boots Linux from JFFS2-formatted flash
Jul 8, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsInfocity Inc. announced that the first reference operating system for its “FlashBoot” system initialization and boot-loader software module is MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.0. According to Infocity, FlashBoot supports the Linux JFFS2 file system, and enables diskless system boot and easy system configuration.
“Multiplexed system management capabilities allow users to select or boot any of multiple kernels on flash ROM, and upgrade the system in a stable and simple way even after the product is shipped,” Infocity said. “Using duplicated booting images and memory check features, systems can boot easily and in a stable fashion. In the event of system failure during the creation of the OS boot images, FlashBoot provides a safe re-start using backup boot images.”
The reference design version of FlashBoot was developed for RadicalTV, Infocity's advanced set-top box reference software implementation for broadcasting and broadband communications, and was validated running on MontaVista Linux in May 2003. Invocity expects to release a MIPS processor version of FlashBoot for MontaVista Linux during Q3, 2003.
