Sysgo updates embedded Linux OS, tools

Nov 8, 2004 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Sysgo is launching an updated version of its embedded Linux operating system and tools, at the “electronica” show in Munich, November 9-12. ELinOS v3.1 includes a 2.6.9 Linux kernel option, Windows hosting, and “many improvements for the embedded market,” the German embedded Linux specialist says.

According to Sysgo, the new 2.6.9 Linux kernel, available on x86, PPC, and ARM, offers:

  • An improved scheduler with inherently faster response times
  • Large portions of the kernel are interruptable
  • Reduced task-switching latency
  • Improved NPTL (native POSIX threads library)
  • Optimized memory management
  • Block I/O
  • Security modules such as IPSec and SELinux (security-enhanced Linux)

Together, the improvements in the 2.6 kernel make it suitable for a variety of industrial applications, according to Sysgo. The 2.4 kernel remains available with ELinOS v3.1 as well, and is fully supported by ELinOS tools.

ELinOS comes with a “complete development environment,” according to Sysgo, including the “CoTools” — Codeo and Cognito — which were launched with the v3.0 release in May. Codeo is an IDE (integrated development environment) based on Eclipse, while Cognito is a graphical system browser for run-time performance analysis.

Additionally, ELinOS v3.1 is backed by Sysgo's “Custom Board Support Program,” which the company describes as a “bracket between hardware vendors and device manufacturers to slim down the value chain.” The Program enables developers to configure kernels for specific hardware targets without deep hardware knowledge of those targets, says Sysgo, which recently announced support for CPU modules from MEN Micro and Kontron.

CEO Knut Degen said, “Our customer survey has shown that many developers want to develop applications for Linux targets, but use the existing Windows infrastructure.”

Sysgo in May claimed that ELinOS was the best-selling embedded Linux OS in Europe.
