Tiemann: Eclipse is an idea whose time has come
Feb 5, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsRed Hat CTO Michael Tiemann described Eclipse as “an idea whose time has come” during a keynote address at EclipseCon, according to an ADTmag.com story. Reportedly, Tiemann compared Eclipse to the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee, and the creation of Linux by Linus Torvalds, in describing Eclipse… as a “tipping point in the making.”
Tiemann reportedly said Eclipse may bridge the open source and Java development communities, succeeding where other attempts to create universal development frameworks have failed.
Tiemann further asserted that enhancing software security could provide a “killer app” for Eclipse, stating, “Eclipse gives me hope that it can provide a framework for the Holy Grail of multilevel security,” as quoted by ADTmag.com.
Additionally, Tiemann reminded attendees that Eclipse is not just for Java development: C, C++, and Python are supported as well, while IBM even has a COBOL project in the works.
