Tiny, low-cost XScale SBC runs Linux

Oct 7, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 21 views

CompuLab is shipping a tiny XScale SBC (single-board-computer) priced at $57 in quantities of a thousand. The CM-X270W is based on an Intel processor and multimedia accelerator, includes Debian Linux, and can be configured to order. It is supported by an embedded designer/manufacturer in the UK.

In addition to the CM-X270W, CompuLab offers several other SBCs designed for mezzanine attachment to custom application boards through miniature high-density connectors. For example, its ARMcore GX is based on Intel's PXA255 embedded processor.

The CM-X270W offers advanced graphics capabilities, thanks to an onboard multimedia accelerator from Intel. UK custom embedded engineering and manufacturing house Anders Electronics offers bespoke graphical systems development on the CM-X270W.

CompuLab claims the CM-X270W has a low-power design comprising multiple power domains, with an on-board switching regulator. Power consumption “in full operation” is said to be 2 Watts, even when rendering XGA (1024 x 768) or SXGA (1280 x 1024) video. During sleep mode, the board draws under 3mW, the company claims.

CompuLab lists the features and specifications for the CM-X270W as follows:

  • Intel XScale PXA270 clocked at 512MHz
  • Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator with 8MB dedicated frame buffer
    • resolution 1280x1024x16Bpp or 1024x768x24Bpp
    • 3D acceleration
    • MPEG4 decoder
  • 64MB RAM
  • 512MB on-board flash disk
  • Video input
  • Touch screen controller
  • AC97 and audio codec
  • 10/100 Ethernet port
  • PCI
  • 4 x USB ports
  • 4 x serial ports
  • 100 MHz local bus
  • IDE
  • PCMCIA / CF
  • SD / MMC
  • Operates from -40C to +85C
  • 2.6 x 2.3 inches (68 x 58 mm)
  • Compatible with other CompuLab modules through CAMI connectors

Availability

The CM-X270W is shipping now, along with a 2.6.12.2 Linux kernel and Debian ARM Linux filesystem. The board also supports Windows CE 5.0, CompuLab says.
