TL1 Agent Builder source code released under GPL
Sep 12, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 85 viewsDallas, TX — (press release) — Simple Network Magic Corporation (SNMC) announced the release of TLWonder, a GUI-based tool for generating TL1 Agent software for embedded systems. The program is part of a suite of applications and utilities known as QuickStack. SNMC has used components of TLWonder to successfully develop embedded TL1 agents for several telecommunications systems. [For a definition of TL1, see this story.]
The TLWonder toolkit is built upon Tcl/Tk, and makes use of incrTcl. It includes an embedded database known as Intercede, which was developed from scratch by SNMC for the purpose of creating embedded agents. “The real power of TLWonder is in how it makes use of the Intercede database to create a MIB, just like in SNMP,” said Mark Poland, chief designer of the TLWonder system. “We decided to create TLWonder in-house because no other tools we looked at created a database view for the TL1 commands.”
Mr. Poland continues, “In addition to the power of the generated MIB, TLWonder allows you to associate rules with each variable in the TL1 MIB. Each rule can execute one or more Tcl scripts.” Once the MIB, TL1 commands, and rules have been defined TLWonder will generate HTML documentation and Tcl code for building a TL1 parser/response generator agent.
Daris Nevil, President of SNMC, provided the reason for moving TLWonder to open source. “We feel we have brought TLWonder as far as we can, given the time we have to spend on it. Our hope is that a community of developers will arise to take TLWonder to the next level. In the mean time, SNMC will continue to use the tool for development of TL1 agents for our customers, and we'll extend its features as much as we can.”
Mr. Nevil explained that SNMC considers the code to be in “pre-alpha” form. “We found that some GUI-related bugs appeared when we ported the Tcl code from Windows to Linux.”
