“Tough Digital Assistants” run Linux/Qtopia

The slim, light-weight TDAs run Linux 2.4.18 (with Qtopia v1.7.0) on a Freescale MXL processor, come with up to 128MB RAM and 256MB Flash, and offer built-in Bluetooth and optional 802.11b wireless.
Olympus lists the following key features and specifications for the R1000 series TDAs:
- Processor — Freescale XML (unspecified clock rate)
- Memory — up to 128 MB RAM; up to 256 MB NAND Flash
- Display — 3.5-inch, 240×320 resolution, 65K-color, transflective TFT LCD with touchscreen and LED backlight
- Wireless:
- Model R1000 — integrated Bluetooth
- Model R1018 — integrated Bluetooth and 802.11b
- I/O ports — USB, IrDA, audio in/out jacks, speaker, microphone
- Operating system choices:
- Embedded Linux 2.4.18 (with Qtopia v 1.7.0 graphical windowing environment)
- Windows CE 4.2
- Environmental:
- Operating temperature — -10 to +50 degrees C
- Drop test — 4-foot drop to concrete at three temperatures (high, low, and room)
- Dust and water — sealed to IP54 Category II
- Dimensions — 13.2 x 7.6 x 1.6 cm (5.2 x 3.0 x 0.6 inches)
- Weight — 180 grams (includes battery)
- Battery supports up to 12 hours of operating time
Olympus, best known for its cameras and optics, says that it has a “long standing history” of designing and building wireless handheld devices for an unspecified OEM partner.
