LynuxWorks announced today that its LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) and BlueCat Linux OS now support Transmeta's new Crusoe Special Embedded (SE) processor. Additionally, Transmeta has joined the LynuxWorks “SynergyWorks” third-party alliance program, the company said.

The “energy efficient” Crusoe SE processor is described as targeting a wide array of embedded applications, including industrial automation, scientific instrumentation, point-of-sale terminals, automotive infotainment, process control and home automation systems.

According to LynuxWorks, “LynxOS provides the performance and reliability needed for mission-critical and real-time embedded applications [based on the Crusoe SE processor], by implementing the Linux processing model, POSIX conformance along with open, standard application programming interfaces (APIs), plus support for sophisticated hardware features of the processors [including MMU support].” BlueCat Linux complements the LynxOS RTOS offering, “by adding an open source alternative for OEMs whose applications require soft real time performance along with the benefit from the wealth of advantages that embedded Linux has to offer,” the company added.
