Aug 28, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Taiwan — (press release excerpt) — software vendor TUXIA and chipmaker Rise announced that they are collaborating to bring embedded Linux solutions to the emerging Thin Client and Information Appliance (IA) market. As part of the alliance, TUXIA will port its embedded Linux software suite, TASTE (TUXIA Appliance Synthesis Technology), to Rise's x86-compatible system-on-chip processors.

TASTE's block compression technology allows a 3:1 file compression for reduced memory footprint and system costs, while Rise's SOC's offer high performance, low power consumption, and full x86 compatibility.

The market for information appliance devices is expected to grow rapidly in the next few years. Research firm IDC forecasts that the worldwide market for information appliances will grow from more than 31 million units in 2000 to more than 168 million units by 2005.
