Win Enterprises announced a 1U network appliance that runs Linux and supports Intel's Core 2 Quad processor. The PL-80140 accepts up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, has room for a 3.5-inch hard disk or CompactFlash storage, and includes six gigabit Ethernet ports with four-port bypass, the company says.

The PL-80140, said to be aimed at a broad range of network applications including "gateway security, UTM, network management, load balancing, WAN optimized acceleration, and VoIP gateways," is just one of many 1U networking appliances offered by Win Enterprises. (Earlier such devices include the PL-80090 released in April of this year, and the PL-60760 released in 2008.)

Win Enterprises says the PL-80140 is built with Intel components that are "warranted for longevity to provide long product life." The device uses the chipmaker's Q35 northbridge and ICH9DO southbridge, supporting the Core 2 Quad processor. Other CPUs that use Intel's LGA775 socket, which include the Core 2 Duo, Pentium dual-core, and Celeron D, are also supported, the company adds.

Two DIMM sockets are said to accept up to 4GB of DDR2 memory. Meanwhile, the PL-80140 can run Linux or Windows XP either from a disk drive installed in its single 3.5-inch bay, or on a CompactFlash Type II slot, says Win Enterprises.

The device's rear panel (not pictured) sports three cooling fans. The front panel (above) includes, from left to right, two USB 2.0 ports, a serial port with RJ45 console connector, and six gigabit Ethernet ports. Win Enterprises says four of the Ethernet ports — which use PCI Express x1 technology and Intel's 82547L circuitry — include bypass functionality in case of system failure.

Also on the front panel is a 2 x 16 character display and four-button keypad (both optional). The PL-80140 additionally has a second serial port, available via an internal header, according to Win Enterprises.

Win Enterprises says the PL-80140 is available with optional cryptographic hardware, though no further details were provided. The device, which is sampling now, costs $554 in OEM quantities, according to the company.
