VPN stack gains roaming features

Jan 16, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Certicom plans to enhance its cross-platform development kit for client-side embedded VPN (virtual private network) stacks by adding several features aimed at dual-mode, WiFi/cellular phones. Security Builder IPSec 3.0 aims to enable VoIP phones to roam seamlessly between networks, even when using IPSec (Internet protocol security) to connect to VPNs.

Security Builder IPSec 3.0 will add support for MOBIKE (mobile Internet key exchange) protocol, an IETF project aimed at supporting FMC (fixed mobile convergence) applications, including both IMS and UMS (Internet multimedia subsystem, and unified mobile access) protocols. The upcoming 3.0 release will also add the capability to use IPSec (Internet protocol security) with Mobile IP, according to Certicom.

Additional touted features include:

  • Small code size
  • Low CPU requirements
  • Used by Motorola, Sierra Wireless, Sony Ericsson, and others
  • Supports Linux, Symbian, Windows CE, Windows Mobile 5, and Windows XP

According to Jim Alfred, director of product management, “FMC offers a lot of promise — the challenge is providing seamless mobility together with robust security. The inclusion of MOBIKE and Mobile IP should be considered part of the overall solution at the outset.”

Availability

Certicom has not yet announced a target date for the availability of Security Builder IPSec 3.0.

Certicom also markets a Security Builder VoIP stack toolkit said to have FMC capabilities.
