Open source embedded database regains commercial, community support

A company in Bellevue, Wash. is supporting an embeddable open source database to promote its consulting services and embedded database development community. ITTIA offers several levels of support for db.* (pronounced “dee bee star”), a lightweight C-language database with a 20-year pedigree targeting set-top boxes, telecom, and other embedded uses. Arium adds ARM, XScale to Linux debugging tools

Eden-based mini-ITX SBC supports Linux

BCM Advanced Research has introduced a Mini-ITX SBC (single board computer) intended for medical, POS, kiosk, and digital multimedia applications. The MX266 supports Via Eden processors ranging from 400MHz to 1.0GHz. The board is fully compatible with Linux, BCM says. (more…)

Instant Linux server on a Flash chip

A network solutions provider in Japan is selling Flash chips that it says can turn most any x86 system into an instant embedded Linux server. Infotram says its “Infobox server chips” reduce installation time, increase security and stability, and improve performance thanks to a RAM-disk based filesystem. (more…)

Multithreaded multimedia Linux stack runs on Sigma DVD chips

Taiwanese embedded software firm EzHomeTech has updated its software platform for Linux- and uClinux-based video-on-demand systems, media adapters, portable media players, and home gateways. SoC Software Platform (SSP) 2.1 provides a “high performance, multithreaded, media streaming embedded GUI system” for Sigma Designs 8550 and 8620 embedded processors, the company says. (more…)

LinuxWorld press room runs on… BSD and Windows?

Linux is the fastest growing OS in the mobile device market, but currently accounts for less than 2 percent of total shipments, according to this research report from Canalys.
