DSP-free multimedia SoC uses new SuperH core

Renesas is readying a SuperH system-on-chip (SoC) powerful enough to process multimedia on systems without dedicated DSPs (digital signal processors). The SH7780 will use a new SH-4-compatible core and feature three buses and an improved cache architecture. It will target car navigation systems, game machines, and digital home electronics products. 64-bit embedded processors poised for hypergrowth

[Updated Aug. 17, 2004] — The market for 64-bit embedded processors will grow rapidly, fueled by demand for cellular handsets, PCs, and DVD players, according to a report from In-Stat/MDR. Ironically, the report also found that ARM leads the 64-bit microprocessor market — even though it lacks a 64-bit product. (more…)

Linux squeezing WinCE, VxWorks out of devices

Market research firm VDC (Venture Development Corporation) says embedded developers are turning away from Microsoft Windows CE, Wind River VxWorks, and roll-your-own in-house OSes as they embrace embedded Linux in growing numbers. OSDL opens office in Beijing

The OSDL (Open Source Development Labs) will open an office in the Chinese capital of Beijing, where it will work with government agencies and IT companies to improve and promote Linux. China has a rapidly growing Linux software market and is a priority for the OSDL. (more…)

Report: PDA market to reach $3 billion by 2009

According to a report released today by analyst firm Research and Markets, the global market for PDAs totaled $1.77 billion in 2003, and will grow to around $3 billion over the next five years. The data comes from the firm's newly released report, “Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Market Opportunities, Strategies, and Forecasts, 2004 to 2009.” (more…)

Linux will threaten Symbian dominance in the smartphone market, according to a research report published by analyst firm Research and Markets.
