Dual-core PowerPC chip gains DIY Linux support

Timesys has announced that its subscription-based service for embedded Linux developers now supports a networking processor with dual 1.5GHz PowerPC cores. The company's LinuxLink subscription for Freescale's MPC8572 PowerQUICC III helps developers create and maintain custom SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) Linux distributions for the chip, Timesys says. Dutch UMPC runs Ubuntu Linux

Dutch integrator Van Der Led (VDL) Designs has announced a clone of the Asus Eee PC ultra-mini PC (UMPC) notebook. The WiFi-enabled “Jisus” UMPC is equipped with a Chinese-made 1GHz Loongson CPU, has an 8.9-inch display, and runs Ubuntu Linux. (more…)

Linux SDK outsourcer seeks silicon partners

Embedded Alley (EA) hopes silicon vendors will hire it to develop and maintain their Linux software development kits (SDKs). The professional services and consulting firm's new Silicon Vendor Partner Program (SVPP) offers customized SDKs that vendors can freely distribute, and includes mainline kernel maintenance and regression testing. Industrial PC vendor distributes Ubuntu

Ampro will begin distributing a Ubuntu Linux derivative with its x86-compatible single-board computers this month, it said. “Ampro Embedded Linux” (AEL) combines a choice of standard or real-time kernel.org Linux with a standard Ubuntu 7.10 filesystem, giving customers a well-tested open-source leg up on evaluation and development, the company suggests. PowerPC SoCs on demo at ESC

Sophia Systems has announced a MID (mobile internet device) development platform using Intel's new Centrino Atom chipset. A French company says its UPnP Server middleware stack has been approved by the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA). Intel updates junior laptop
