Fanless industrial PC taps Atom

Ibase is shipping a “slim-type” fanless embedded computer that runs on an 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 with up to 1GB of memory. The CSB200-883 system is equipped with a 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD), two gigabit Ethernet ports, and four USB ports, says the company. (more…)

Router platform runs OpenWRT Linux

Ubicom is shipping a OpenWRT Linux-based router platform and reference design using the company's new Ubicom IP7100 Router Gateway Evaluation board. The Ubicom board incorporates its StreamEngine IP7100 series network RISC processor, and includes a gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports, says the company. (more…)

Feature-packed UMPC survives four-foot drops

Data Ltd announced a ruggedized UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) claimed to survive multiple four-foot drops onto concrete. The Linux-compatible “DLI 8400” uses a 1.6GHz Atom processor, has hard disk or SSD (solid state disk) storage, and operates for nine hours via two hot-swappable batteries, the company says. (more…)

Biodegradable, solar-powered netbook runs Linux

A startup in Spain is readying a mini-netbook with open source Linux software and a solar power option. The under-$200 “Gyy” is based on a MIPS-based Ingenic processor clocked to 400MHz, offers an 8-inch, 800 x 480 display, and is made of biodegradable materials, says iUnika. (more…)

Hypervisor rev’d for higher reliability

Xen.org announced release 3.4 of its widely deployed, Xen virtualization hypervisor, which is widely used in Linux environments. The open source Xen 3.4 offers device pass-through improvements using Xen Client Initiative (XCI) technology, enhanced integration with the Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor, and improved reliability and power management, says the project. Eurotech spins Atom development kits

Eurotech announced six different development kits for customers wanting to create products based on Intel's Z5xx processors. The “Atom Development Systems,” mostly mounted on Plexiglas carriers with foldout LCD displays and onboard storage, are available with Linux images. (more…)

Home media server to demo on Intel Atom platform

[Updated: 12PM] — At Computex, Intel and Amahi plan to demonstrate an embedded version of the latter's Amahi Linux Home Server software designed for Intel Atom N270 processors. Portwell has announced two fanless, battery-operable Mini-ITX motherboards using Intel Atom N270 processors. The WADE-8071 and WADE-8170 work off DC power, include CompactFlash slots, have PCI Express x1 expansion slots, support dual displays, and have gigabit Ethernet, says Portwell. (more…)

Low-cost pluggable NAS adds Linux support

A $100 networked-attached storage (NAS) device using the Marvell SheevaPlug reference design has been updated to support Linux desktops. The Cloud Engines Pogoplug NAS, which gained 64-bit OS support and easier searching and sharing software, also received its own plug from The New York Times. (more…)

GNU tools touted for faster compiling

CodeSourcery has updated its commercially supported GNU- and Eclipse-based software development toolkits with compiler optimizations and other enhancements.
