6U CompactPCI SBC runs Linux

Aug 25, 2009 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 5 views

Concurrent Technologies announced a 6U CompactPCI SBC aimed at the defense, industrial control, and transportation markets. The PP 531/06x includes a dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo clocked at 1.86GHz or 2.26GHz, up to 8GB of soldered DDR3 SDRAM, dual PMC/XMC sites, and four gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

The single-slot PP 531/06x single board computer (SBC) can operate as a system controller board, a peripheral board, or as a satellite blade, according to Concurrent Technologies. The board can be purchased with either a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 or a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL9400 CPU, both supported by the Intel GS45 northbridge and 9M-E I/O southbridge, the company adds.

Both these dual-core, 45nm-fabricated CPUs offer a shared last-level cache of 6MB, as well as a 1066MHz Front Side Bus (FSB), enhanced power management, and support for 64-bit operating systems (OSes), says the company. The PP 531/06x is said to access up to 8GB of DDR3-1066 soldered dual channel SDRAM with a peak bandwidth of 16 Gb/s.

The PP 531/06x supports two PMC/XMC sites that boast front and rear I/O, as well as compliance with PICMG 2.16 (Ethernet fabric), PICMG 2.9 (IPMI), and PICMG 2.1 (hot swap), says Concurrent. Each PMC site is said to support up to 100MHz PCI-X operation, and to offer x4 PCI Express (PCIe) XMC interfaces, with site 1 also supporting x8 PCIe. The PP 531/06x's CompactPCI control/data plane can operate at 33/66MHz backplane PCI signaling speeds, says the company.

Onboard I/O is said to include four gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and four USB 2.0 interfaces, both split equally between front and rear I/O. Rear-panel interfaces include keyboard, mouse, and RS-232/422/485 serial interfaces. The board also offers dual SATA300 interfaces and analog graphics output at resolutions up to 2048 x 1536, Concurrent adds.

Options include an onboard 2.5-inch SATA300 hard disk drive (HDD) and CompactFlash storage, as well as a rear transition module. Extended temperature versions are also available, with other versions available soon, including ruggedized conduction-cooled, and air-cooled models. OS support is said to include Linux, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, Solaris, VxWorks, and QNX.
