Axis releases latest Linux for ETRAX system-on-chip
May 7, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsAxis Communications has just released its version of Linux 2.4 for developers designing systems based on the company's newest system-on-chip (SOC) processor, the ETRAX 100LX. The new OS version includes all the standard enhancements resulting from the Linux 2.4 kernel; it also offers full support for new features within the ETRAX 100LX, such as the internal MMU (memory management unit) and USB ports.
Linux support for the ETRAX 100LX is now a standard feature of the official Linux kernel, available at www.linux.org. A complete distribution, which includes other important applications for the ETRAX, is available for free public download at the Axis developer website.
The ETRAX 100LX processor is Axis' latest system-on-chip (SOC) processor for embedded systems. The chip's key strong points are its relatively high performance combined with a large number of built-in peripheral interfaces. The 32-bit processor runs at 100 MHz and includes internal controllers for 100 Mbit Ethernet, 4 serial ports, 2 USB ports, 2 parallel ports, 4 IDE (disk) ports, 2 SCSI ports, and more. This, in combination with its relatively low power consumption makes the device well suited to a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from industrial systems to home appliances, including both wired and wireless networking (including Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b).
