Basically, “EFI” in, PC BIOS out, says Intel engineer

DeviceForge.com has published an article by a staff engineer in Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group (EPG) that introduces an alternative to BIOS technology that could result in faster booting, better manageability, and additional features. The Intel Platform Innovation Framework for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) offers a modern replacement for the BIOS, according to the author, who… notes that the BIOS has remained relatively unchanged despite rapid evolution in other areas of computing technology since the 1980s.

The Intel Platform Innovation Framework is useful for a broad range of systems including PCs, servers, handhelds, consumer devices, and embedded systems, and is independent of processor architecture.
