Trango demo’s hypervisor for Linux STBs, phones

French start-up Trango Systems is demonstrating ARM926 and XScale versions of its hypervisor technology at the ARM Developers' Conference this week in Santa Clara, Calif. The Trango Hypervisor divides a single core into multiple virtual processors, enabling multiple execution environments to run securely, side-by-side, the company says. (more…)

Wireless thin client runs Linux

Wyse Technology has introduced what it claims to be the industry's first family of high-speed, WiFi-enabled thin clients. The Wireless V-Class thin clients, available with an embedded Linux OS, simplify installation because the only required connection is power, according to the company. (more…)

Linux not ready for mobile phones, Nokia exec says

Linux has not reached maturity as a mobile phone OS, Nokia's head of corporate strategy, Jarkko Sairanen, reportedly said recently. Cited shortcomings include a fragmented implementation landscape that keeps developers away, and too large a memory footprint. However, Nokia may re-think its position on Linux in the future, an interview published by ZDNet-Asia suggests. (more…)

Linux mobile phone talk on tap tonight in Palo Alto

Embedded Linux developer service adds ARM9 MCU

Embedded Linux developer services specialist TimeSys has launched a “LinuxLink” subscription offering that supports designs based on a $6, ARM9-based Atmel microcontroller (MCU). The AT91SAM9260 has a 200MIPS (million instructions per second) ARM926EJ-S core with onboard flash and SRAM, is pin-compatible with Atmel's ARM7-based MCUs, and targets real-time control applications. GPL VoIP libraries, softphone gain enhanced security

The GNU telephony project reports that GPL-licensed implementations of two key security protocols are available for use in Linux-based VoIP (voice-over-IP) devices and softphones. New IBM PPC chips, cores, northbridges conserve power

IBM has made series of chip announcements, including 90nm copper-process 750- and 970-series PowerPC processors targeting storage and communications; a new, more energy-efficient northbridge for 9xx-series chips; and, several 46x-series cores in synthesizable and 90nm hard versions.
