Linux a national security risk, competing RTOS vendor claims

Dual-licensed embeddable SSL library achieves first stable release

PeerSec Networks has achieved the first stable release of its dual-licensed Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) library created specifically for devices running Linux and other embedded operating systems. MatrixSSL 1.0 includes host and client implementations under 50KB each, and can secure socket-based communications on “even the smallest devices,” the company says. (more…)

Intel adds four new mobile Pentiums

Intel announced four new mobile Pentium processor variants today. The latest Pentium M and Celeron M processors range from 900 MHz to 1.4 GHz clock speeds with power consumptions from 7 to 24.5 Watts, and are based on Intel's 0.13-micron manufacturing technology (see table, below). (more…)

All-digital SciFi movie edited on embedded Linux

Embedded Linux, standard Linux file sharing protocols, and Linux video editing software from SpectSoft, LLC were used to produce the upcoming film, “Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation.” Director and effects legend Phil Tippett chose SpectSoft's Linux-based RaveHD recorder/editor for its flexible support for uncompressed video. Embedded Linux supports ARM-based SoCs for networking devices

NetSilicon is offering a uClinux software development kit (SDK) for its NET+50 system-on-chip (SoC), and will soon release a full Linux SDK for its recently introduced NS9750 chip. The ARM-based SoCs integrate networking functions, and target point-of-sale (POS) terminals, networked displays, projectors, thin clients, and access control applications. (more…)

uClinux release supports all Apple iPods, includes GUI

A new release from the “Linux on iPod” project supports first, second, and third-generation iPods (but not mini-iPods). The new release includes Podzilla, “a basic GUI demo similar to the native Apple firmware.” iPod Linux installs alongside the native firmware, providing a boot-time choice. (more…)

Commercial software application programming interfaces (APIs) are a major source of costly bugs, according to author Steve Graves, CEO of McObjects. New high-performance synthesizable 32-bit cores support Linux

MIPS Technologies is shipping four new 32-bit synthesizable processor cores that support embedded Linux. The new “24K” cores, expected to appear in customer-implemented silicon before 2005, target high-volume applications such as broadband access, wireless, networking, digital television, and office automation.
