Device Profile: Ponto-i Digipop commercial jukebox

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil start-up Ponto-i has developed a jukebox for public venues that runs on sophisticated embedded Linux technology, but has a retro look reminiscent of jukeboxes from the 50s. The “Digipop” jukebox runs a custom Linux distribution based on Debian, along with LinuxBIOS, and uses a mix of custom and commodity PC hardware. (more…)

CELF Linux source tree gains new mobile phone, telematics chips

Lineo Solutions has contributed two more embedded Linux kernel ports to the CE Linux Forum (CELF) source tree. The ports support mobile phone and automotive telematics chips from Hitachi spinoff Renesas. They include power management, real-time, and other performance optimizations for consumer electronic devices. (more…)

Open source conference registration opens

Intel unveils next-gen XScale processors

Intel took the wraps off its next generation XScale mobile processors today, at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan. Intel says that its new PXA27x processors (formerly code-named “Bulverde”) incorporate several new technologies aimed at the multimedia, low power, and security requirements of advanced cell phones and wireless PDAs. Residential gateway reference design includes uClinux

Micrel Semiconductor and Arcturus Networks have released a hardware and software reference design for residential gateways. The design includes ARM-based network processors from Micrel and residential gateway (RG) software from Arcturus. It targets OEMs developing RG, SOHO (small office/home office), and WLAN (wireless LAN) devices. (more…)

RTAI release brings real-time add-ons to Linux 2.6

Project Leader Paolo Mantegazza reports that a test version of RTAI-3.1 is available for download, featuring real-time support for Linux 2.4.xx and 2.6.x. The release may represent the first implementation of real-time performance in the 2.6-series kernel, according to Mantegazza. (more…)

Geode GX1 based Mini-ITX SBC supports fanless operation

Taiwan Commate Computer Inc. (Commell) announced a high-integration single-board computer in the compact (170 x 170 mm) Mini-ITX form-factor, based on a 300MHz AMD Geode GX1 (x86-compliant) processor. Commell says the LV-650 is well suited for fanless embedded, industrial, and mobile computing applications and supports Linux. (more…)

Software tool aims to assess IP risks of re-used code

Black Duck Software is beta testing a software product that aims to help Linux developers assess the intellectual property (IP) risks associated with the re-use of program code. The company expects to ship in mid-May its Black Duck product, comprising a giant database of software source code and associated licensing information, and a client-server source code comparison tool.
