Wind River tilts tools toward Eclipse

Embedded software giant Wind River has signaled it may move away from its proprietary “Tornado” development tools platform, favoring Eclipse, an open technology platform for cross-vendor tools integration popular among embedded Linux developers, as the basis of its future tools products. (more…)

Device Profile: Roku HD1000 high definition digital media player

Roku calls its first product, the $499 HD1000, “the world's first high-definition digital media player.” The product displays content from memory cards or networked PCs on High Definition TVs (HDTVs) including LCD and Plasma TVs. The HD1000's open, Linux-based architecture makes it especially interesting to embedded hackers, and Roku encourages such use. (more…)

Linux lab raises awareness of kernel development process

The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) announced a new initiative today aimed at raising awareness about how the Linux kernel is developed. With the highly-anticipated release of the final Linux 2.6 production kernel due shortly, OSDL is taking a series of steps to increase customer confidence in using Linux, the group said. (more…)

Software guru releases open source “desktop (and palmtop) roadmap”

StarOffice 7 — the best and worst of Office

LinuxDevices.com editor Henry Kingman receives quite a few Microsoft files, even from Linux companies. To end run around the data, Kingman suggests Sun's StarOffice 7 as an option. Lineo joins ARM Connected Community

MontaVista leagues with Renesas on Linux mobiles

Multimedia standards consortium gains members, embedded momentum

The Khronos Group announced that LSI Logic, Toshiba, and XCE have joined as Contributing Members, bringing its membership tally to 40 companies.
