CELF at IFA: great embedded Linux PR

Aug 28, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

The recently formed Consumer Electronics Linux Forum (CELF) has generated terrific PR for embedded Linux at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, Germany.

A story at Reuters calling the IFA “the sector's largest trade fair” quotes consumer electronics executives and experts pointing to Linux as the operating system of the future for televisions, DVDs, and set-top boxes. The story touts CELF for its success in gaining support from powerful companies and its goals of making Linux boot faster and use less power.

Linux's low cost is given as a principle advantage in the consumer commodities market, where slim profit margins make cost cutting important.

Some of the devices listed in the article include Motorola's A760 Linux smartphone and Philips iPronto integrated remote control. The article quotes a Philips executive predicting that units based on Linux will sell “in the millions” in future generations.
