Cheapest embedded ARM/Linux development platform?

Jul 4, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

One LinuxDevices.com reader (Alex) notes that ARM development platforms are generally expensive, precluding their use by amateurs, enthusiasts, or even professionals constrained to a budget. But Alex thinks he may have found a solution to this dilemma . . .

“Recently while looking for a solution I came across Simtec Electronics and found a full ATX developer board (the Cirrus 7500FE Evaluation Board) for £99 ($160 USD). That's cheaper than many “pic micro” systems!,” Alex writes.

“The board isn't stripped down either, there is provision for IDE, sound, VGA video, and even networking,” adds Alex. “All that said, it isn't the fastest CPU at only 64MHz, and there is only one ISA expansion slot — but for the price, I don't think that's a drawback. To top it all, it comes with a Debian GNU/Linux install CD and basic online support.”

“Personally I know a good deal when I see one and have already ordered mine. Simtec assured me that the board is available from stock,” Alex concludes.
