Octagon Systems is shipping from stock what it claims to be the first available single-board computer (SBC) in the new EPIC (Embedded Platform for Industrial Computing) form-factor. The ruggedized Octagon XE-800 is based on a 300MHz AMD Geode x86 processor, supports -40 to +85 deg. C extended temperature operation, is available with an optional Linux 2.6 starter kit, and targets military, security, industrial, and mobile applications.

The EPIC form factor was launched earlier this month by five SBC vendors as an open industrial standard filling the gap between the PC/104 and EBX formats.

Venture Development Corp. (VDC) Analyst Eric Gulliksen said, “The publication of the EPIC form factor specification and the support commitment by five market leaders brings relief to system manufacturers who need consistency and standardization in a mid-sized SBC. EPIC could be the biggest development in the industry since the PC/104 Consortium was founded 12 years ago.”

The XE-800 is based on a low-power 300MHz AMD Geode GX1 processor, and includes PC core functions along with a CRT/LCD display controller, 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, six USB ports (four 2.0 compliant), two serial ports, 48 digital I/O lines. Expansion capabilities are provided by PC/104 and PC/104-Plus and CompactFlash connectors. All I/O connectors are vertically oriented.

The XE-800 is priced at $595 with volume discounts.
